Students will need at least a grade B, in Core Science and Additional Science for both coursework and exams and a recommendation from subject teachers to follow this course.
If you enjoyed the Biology modules of the Science course or are interested in topical biological issues, this AS level may be of interest to you.
Students who have studied at Higher Tier will be at a distinct advantage.
The AS Level is now a stand-alone qualification from the full A Level qualification. However, the two are co-teachable.
The AS Level is divided into four modules.
Module 1: Development of practical skills in Biology
Module 2: Foundations in Biology
Module 3: Exchange and Transport
Module 4: Biodiversity, Evolution and Disease
Two further modules will be completed to gain the full A Level qualification.
Module 5: Communication, Homeostasis and Energy
Module 6: Genetics, Evolution and Ecosystems
Students who gain a grade D or better can continue to A2. Those who do not will either be asked to retake the whole year or drop the subject.
You need to achieve at least 45% in the internally assessed work in Year 12 to be able to continue with the course at AS level.
At AS Level:
AS Papers 1 and 2 can assess any content from Modules 1 to 4.
At A Level:
A Level Paper 1 assesses the content from Modules 1, 2, 3 and 5.
A Level Paper 2 assesses the content from Modules 1, 2, 4 and 6.
A Level Paper 3 assesses the content from Modules 1 to 6.
All Exams are taken in May or June
