AS/A2 Further Mathematics

COURSE DETAILS

Students who are considering taking this course need to be heading for a good grade A, or an A*, in their GCSE Mathematics. This is a varied course, and students successfully completing it will gain two A level grades, reflecting a broad understanding of higher Mathematics. Students will be taught by two teachers for a total of 16 periods a fortnight.

ASSESSMENT

Over the course of the two years students will complete the full contents of both the Mathematics with Mechanics course, and the Mathematics with Statistics course. In addition they will study two further modules in Pure Mathematics, and two modules in Decision Mathematics. Each of these modules is worth one sixth of an A level.

The order in which the modules are taught varies from year to year but students will definitely complete an AS level in Mathematics by the end of Year 12, they will also be examined on modules equivalent to a full A level.

WHAT COULD I GO ON TO DO AFTER THE COURSE?

This course leads onto all the opportunities outlined on the sheets for Mathematics with Mechanics, and Mathematics with Statistics. In addition it is particularly suited for anyone hoping to take a degree in either Mathematics or Engineering. Whilst a single A level in Mathematics is sufficient for some courses, many universities prefer students to have the Further Mathematics A level as well.
